Rebuilding - XI - Tiger In Captivity
Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing,
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is
----------------
I've been benched for nearly a month now and every time I do try to go out and exercise, mostly swimming, I wind up hurting a few hours later just walking. It's extremely frustrating especially since I am trying to lose weight. Why? Well, Halloween is coming up and I need to fit in my costume.
I had a dining affair with a gorgeous lady the other night who is just as active as I am if not more. We spoke about how restless we get when we are unable to exercise. Working out is not only an a drug in it's own right its a way of life. You take that away and you start to feel like you are living in captivity. Athlete's know whats up. Sometimes it depresses me and I get really down. Luckily sometimes my team mates are there to cheer me up. I won't mention their names but thank you Ms. Pancake! Although I'm sure you are well endow.....not that I've looked....not that I'm gay or anything....not that I have an issue with being....never mind I'll stop, i'm digging a pit I won't be able to climb out of.
Even worse news my left illiotibial band is also starting to become inflamed from friction now. Most likely due to over compensating for my right leg.
-------
If this little guy can do it, why can't I?
I received a second set of cortisone in both knees to help my legs out. I'm going to need to keep off them for another few weeks. What is a cortisone injection you ask? Very good question. Cortisone is a steroid naturally produced by the body. 17-hydroxy-11-dehydrocorticosterone is naturally produced by the body in reaction to stress. It is released by the adrenal glands. It is closely related to coritsol. Cortisone blocks the natural immune response from the body. One of the applications is reducing inflammation.
Many times cortisone is injected directly into a joint via a big ass needle (not the medical term). I tried looking it up. Let's stick with big ass needle. Anyway, luckily for me the doctor injected the bursa. A small fluid filled sac that separates varies layers of things in your body. Inflammation of such bursa is called bursitis.
Injection of the cortisone was done with an exploratory ultrasound machine. So the doctor could see the inside of my leg as the cortisone was being administered. Pictures to come. I found the whole process to be not too painful. You have a normal beesting as the needle is going in and some discomfort while the doctor is spreading the cortisone. I watched the needle go in and kept my eye on it and the ultrasound screen. On a positive note the doctor said I have huge muscles as evidenced by the ultrasound machine.
Side effects of cortisone include weakening of the joint (if injected into a joint) and weakness of the tendons (temporary, about a week), loss of fat in the treated area, skin discomfort/discoloration (temporary at worst).
-------
Picture unrelated, it's a Mai 3 legged tiger looking after the thing she made.
Physical Therapy
PT for short has certainly been a rollercoaster. It's comprised of several stages. First stage is a gentle warmup. Followed up with a stretch. Which leads into a deep tissue massage to breakup the scar tissue. Scar tissue is bad. Second to last stage is exercise to strength the muscles used to support my legs (hips, glutes, quads, everything in between). Lastly ice.
The therapist (therapi, therapie?, therapistes???) do something called Graston technique on my legs. Most athlete's should be familiar with this. It is a form of active release therapy. Active release is designed to treat overused/overworked muscles and centers around relieving tension caused by scarring. Sorry got lazy on this one and only linked the wikipedia article.
-------
Set of Graston Tools, around $2,000 or more for the set and you need to be licensed. Looks medieval doesn't it? It is.
It hurts, hurts bad, and leaves tough love marks. I feel like I've been Chris Browned after the sessions sometimes. See below. But this is actually good for me. It's breaking up of the scar tissue and realigning it. Allowing the tensor fasciae latae muscle to extend a bit allowing extra room for the illiotibial band to go around the knee.

Chicago Triathlon - Sprint Distance
Although I had ITB(F)S. I still ran the Chicago Triathlon. I was in a lot of pain and I delayed my recovery for a lot longer than I thought I would. Yes I was a stupid poopy head and I shouldn't have done that. It is one of the reasons people don't STAY in the sport. Train smart, recover smart, stay in the game. I need to listen to my body going forward and use the form roller from hell every day.
I was in excruciating pain but you know what. With the help of PT and cortisone injections, I got myself through the race and I got myself a nifty token. I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I joked. I even asked out loud and proudly;
WHERE THE HELL IS THE SHORTCUT?
ARE WE THERE YET?
....
....
....
And my favorite.
I'M DOING THIS FOR A KLONDIKE BAR?????
I haven't gotten that klondike bar. Sadly. However, the token was a medal not only a medal an awesome one! See below.
Mini Girl Update
She was adopted. I'm so happy. Although, I miss her dearly. Even though she was a brat. But I wish everyone could get a forever home. Will you make a pledge to donate to my Team PAWS 2014 fund? If so contact me. Look forward to new fundraising things to come. I will be free from captivity and I will race again. Will it be in 2014? Who knows, but I will still fund raise.

One Republic - Counting Stars
This special edition will contain my first Tri Race Report. As well as injury analysis and my emotional experiences. So those of you who've been waiting for an update sorry for the delay. Sit back, grab a glass of wine and enjoy.
I felt all of these emotions. I mean all of them. Despair, pain, grief, anger, hatred, desperation, madness, fear. I was desperately seeking a quick fix. I cursed God, I yelled at people I shouldn't have. I dropped out of the Chicago 10k because of it. I haven't even been able to train solidly for the Chicago Triathlon. I moved from the Olympic Distance to the Sprint distance. I still don't know what the future will hold. I'm very worried.
I came close to asking the doctor to remove my leg from the knee down. I was prepared to make a life without it if it meant I could continue doing races. It was a legitimate thought in my head. I mean I've seen so many ironman competitors without legs, why not me?
ITBS
Illiotibial Band (Friction) Syndrome, the name of my enemy.
It began mid June. I was running on the treadmill doing a 5k warmup before my swim workout. About 2 miles in my leg started to become fatigued. Which is fairly odd because I've been regularly doing 4-5 miles, however, something felt off, somewhat different. My shins started to hurt, then the very edge of my quads started hurting and then my ankle stop lifting. I had to stop something was wrong. I figured I was just tired so I jumped into the pool and did 15 laps.
I didn't think anything of it until later that night when I could barely walk. I was limping so bad. I didn't go and see a doctor because I was so scared as to what they might have said. I was escorting a female friend of mine home after a show. It was so bad it was like she was walking me home not the other way around.
I healed up in a few days and rested a few more. I biked and swam for a bit as part of my normal training regimen but stayed off for a few extra days. I ran again a week and a half later and did 5k with no problem at all. So I thought oh yes i'm back. The issue was gone?
No not even close. It happened again a week later in July. After my metric century ride the pain came back after a mile run. I needed to see a doctor. Something was terribly wrong with this picture. I was unbelievably terrified. So I went to see my primary. Unfortunately my primary was not there so I had been given one of her colleagues.
At first she didn't know what to make of it. She said it was Osgood–Schlatter disease. All I needed to do was do RICE. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) Something told me that she didn't have a clue what she was talking about. I mean she wasn't a sports medicine doctor and her hesitation. She prescribed anti-inflam medicine and sent me on my way.
2 weeks rest and I could try again. I swam the entire two weeks. My swimming is getting better and I was doing well. I put on my running shoes got on the treadmill at the gym. It happened again. I called my coach and was pacing back and forth talking to him. I was probably out of the race.
After the third time my knee started to give up on me I began to lose it. Mentally I was going through so many emotions. I believe the below image summarizes it very well. I was ready to cut off the leg. I felt like my dream was stolen from me with this weak and frail body. I healed up in a few days and rested a few more. I biked and swam for a bit as part of my normal training regimen but stayed off for a few extra days. I ran again a week and a half later and did 5k with no problem at all. So I thought oh yes i'm back. The issue was gone?

I don't mean to be so harsh in my words but that is how I truly felt. Here is a funny photo.
I saw 3 doctors, had 6 Xrays, 1 MRI. My medical bills have yet to arrive but I expect something like the following image. I'm sure my bills are in the thousands of dollars. My physical therapy sessions are $600/session without insurance. (My insurance does cover it but I need to pay a co-pay)
Another funny photo to lighten the mood.
I am in physical therapy trying my best to resolve ITBS. There are so many issues I want/need to confront. I have a very severe form of ITBS. The symptoms cripple me. ITBS is a very generalized diagnosis. It affects people different. Most runners get ITBS. For me I basically get to the point where my leg shuts down. For others its just pain.
What is ITBS? We need to understand what the band is first. It is a ligament that helps to rotate your hips, it also contributes to stabilizing lateral movement in the knee. ITBS is common amongst runners and is generally referred to as an overuse injury.
The ligament attaches near the knee and will rub if the ligament is too tight. That is what its doing for me. It's rubbing and getting inflamed. This causes me to start running differently which causes a cascading failure of my muscles in my legs.
Why do I still strive? Why do I still want to do triathlons if i'm so broken, so injured?
For her
For her and for dogs like her. That was my foster pup Mini Girl. I love her to death. She's such a brat but she deserves a forever home. I wish I could keep her and be her dad, alas I can't. My schedule is crazy and I wouldn't be able to give her enough hours in the day.
I volunteer and I joined Team PAWS to help animals like Mini Girl.
http://www.pawschicago.org/adoptions/dogs-available-for-adoption/mini-girl-2/
Scores of animals are killed each year due to overcrowding in city pounds because its impossible to care for that many animals with so little resources. It's places like PAWS Chicago that save the day. I do my very best to contribute to PAWS but I need your help as well. If I was a millionaire i'd donate a big portion of my health to PAWS, but I'm not.
I keep emphasizing it but, please if you could throw together a few bucks i'd really appreciate it.

The Immediate - Serenata Immortale
Fermilab aka Sufferfest
I haven't road in a pack in such a long time. To be in the presence of truly elite athletes was quite a bit of excitement and a good bit of fear. Keeping up was my main concern. It was a long haul ride of at least 5 hours which in honestly is probably the longest of the year for me.
To ride at one of America's great institutions of science felt like a huge undertaking. Fields of grass and tight dense groups of trees, unfamiliar terrian, monolithic and iconic buildings, were all part of my view. Well, those things and the Sheila's back wheel. (for as long as I could hold it)
Drafting was big. I had crappy loaner aerobars but that wasn't my biggest problem. Strength and endurance were my main issues. Several of my muscles in my legs were not up to par. Particularly the Sartorius muscle where the muscle meets the knee. The very end of that muscle was radiating pain every time I climbed a small hill or road faster.
My plan of hanging back and catching up at the stop signs proved to be disastrous in the end. I seriously wasn't in the peak shape I needed to be to catch up. There are two underlying issues here. Riding alone without drafting is difficult. You face the challenges of wind on your own. While in an long course race drafting isn't allowed its still somewhat beneficial. Especially beneficial when everyone you are riding with are beasts.
The most memorable time I could remember from this adventure was on the last segment, Sheila, Mark, and Dan were at the top of the hill leading to the main Fermi Lab building all stopped waiting for me. I was about to reach them and I started to unclip but Mark says "NEWBIE YOU DON'T GET TO STOP!" So I clipped back in and road up the hill.

July 4th Metric Century
This ride was much better. I'd say a complete 180 from the previous ride. I got new aerobars and I made it a point to stay on Sheila's wheel. I was averaging per segment 20-22mph. It was a good day. I have the sunburn to prove it!
Nutrition and hydration is the key to success!!!! I had 3 bottles worth of electrolyte infused drink, 6 cookies, 2 small dixie cups of trail mix, a slice watermelon. I knew if I wanted to keep up with these I needed to churn calories. This may have been my issue on my last ride as well. Even though I did have calories they were not enough to satisfy my muscles. It's important to note you shouldn't have solid food during a long course tri or similar race. However this was just a ride.
Thanks to Sheila for inviting me out. It was a far better ride than riding the I&M Canal Trail like I was planning. I&M is a very nice scenic route but not good for training.
Just a note just because you are newbie doesn't give you an excuse to not lead the pack. Everyone has to pull lead duty every once and a while. I plan on doing it more on future rides.

By the way, aerobars on a road bike is just plain weird. This is how it feels.
Independence's Name Day
"Today marks the first anniversary of my bicycle's name day. Now most of you will find this utterly ridiculous. Oh that guy loves his bike so much he named it. If I cared what you'd think, I would have lost all that weight years ago.
The reason why this day is very significant both being our national holiday and my bicycle's name day is very similar. Today marks the day that our country in one voice stood up to tyranny and oppression.
Last year, I named my bicycle Independence. I too fought tyranny and oppression but not from some foreign legion or external force but from my own inner self. I declared that I would hold myself accountable.
I'm always there for all my friends. It's hard to be accountable for that if I didn't have a reasonable chance at living. I declared i'd never return to that old me.
It's because of all of you cheering me on and helping me, some guiding me. That I have a better outlook on life. None of this would be possible if it weren't for you all.
I wouldn't be here if we didn't have a free country. Freedom means making choices. I implore you all to choose wisely when it comes to your health. Ultimately the decision is up to you. Thank you to all our soldiers for paying the ultimate price for our freedom.
Happy Forth of July. Happy Birthday United States of America."

Races
I said to myself last December I will do one race for the hell of it. Here I am 4 bibs later. Signed up for 3 more races. Where did I ever go wrong? I sat at that table in Pick Me Up Cafe with two people who've helped and guided me. I blame credit them for getting me in the race craze. All they had to do was ask me "hey when is your next race?" That is all it took.
I look up to a lot of folks who I consider super human. MarkTheMoper, TheIronShecky, my swim coach Mike each and every day and I know under their guidance I may have the honor of being titled a triathlete. August 25th is coming up real quick. I'm eager to cross that finish line. Until then my training continues.
I can't just give these folks credits. I really have to thank everyone of you. My friends are my inspiration, my spirit if you will. I look back to the old me, the broken tiger, and I am sad at first. Remembering my old self is kind of depressing but I see where I am now. I am truly in my eyes rebuilt from the ground up.
Thank you all for your encouragement, well wishes, and cheer.

Also, I'm happy to report I have a new Teammate on Team PAWs. I suckered her into joining as well. If you want to be my teammate as well feel free to join! Please feel free to message me with any questions you may have. You can DM Tweet me @TheTigerRebuilt.
Run For Their Lives 8k
First i'd like to thank Melissa for doing a fantastic job on the 8k. I hear rumors that it was your first. It certainly didn't look like it. Really good race. I beat my previous 8k time by leaps and bounds. Looking forward to more PAWS Events!
Swimming
I've starting to do long haul swimming upwards of 40 laps. It's been a big deal to me that I want to be able to swim well for the race. 0.93 miles doesn't seem like much but combined with the bike and run it can be a big factor. Especially if the tide is coming in the other direction.

Dammit Moon Moon
Funny story, so generally I swim with tri shorts that are skin tight. However, my tri shorts had holes in them and I wore my swimming trunks instead. I was swimming for so long that on one of my strokes I brushed up against my leg. Ordinaraly this wouldn't be an issue. However I questioned myself as to why my pants were wet. I'd been in the pool for so long (35th lap, 40 or so minutes in) that I forget I was in the pool. I seriously had to think deep and hard as to why my pants were wet.
"Oh i'm in the pool" Took way too long to realize that. I nearly drowned laughing.

1st Long Ride
Had my first long ride of the year (50+) Miles. I rode the I&M Canal Trail. The trail goes from Willowsprings to Lemont (25.1 miles) and a smaller loop is 3.22 miles. My ride included 2 laps of the I&M and one lap of the adjoining loop. The ride started out great. I was coasting at an easy 19 mph (my current long distance max speed) At the 7 mile mark there is a steep hill which should be dubbed Markthemoper Mountain.
Now after this steep hill there is a significant decline where anyone can pickup 25-30 miles per hour. Here is where the story gets better. During my second lap I decided to kick on my afterburners.
Let me tell you. BIGGGGGG mistake. I overshot my course heading and I went past the hard deck. I was in trouble. Hydraulics were going I was about to stall. It was either hit the tree or hit the lake. Luckily I recovered and managed to steer onto the correct course heading. For a minute there I thought I needed to throw down my landing gear. I counted my blessings and continued on my lap.
I also encountered a boogie. (A goose was protecting its nest on the trail) It didn't engage pursuit but it was sure pissed off. I had to use afterburners twice, once in the beginning and another time on the return trip. Great match training.
Swimming
My swimming has become a bit more developed. I feel strong and faster in the water. However, I am not there yet. So my coach turns around and tells me to do a 1x250 (no breaks) My reaction.
Que? Haven't tried it but when I get a swim only day I will attempt it. Anyway, my swimming routine will improve but for now its generally along these lines.
2x25y fly kick on 45
10x50y catch up on 1:45
10x50y f/s pull on 1:45
My last workout was actually a little different.
2x25y fly kick on 45
2x50y catch up on 1:30
1x150y f/s 3:33 total
1x25y b/s on 2
10x50y catch up on 1:30
4x50y b/s on 2
Fostering
I have a new job title. I am now a foster parent of a fur child!. Meet Mini-Girl who is also my new running partner for 2 weeks. She is a little speed demon and she's great. She really needs a home though. So if you are interested please contact me. She needs lots of exercise!

Mark The Hill Crusher
Climbing hills is not a part of training. It's a part of life for my coach Mark. I couldn't believe I survived day 1 of his bike training. It was pretty intense and I didn't go nearly as fast as I thought I would. He's definitely one of the coolest guys I've met and him and Mrs. Coach are big animal people!
400 Miles and Counting
I set out with a goal this year to do 100 miles per month split between biking/running/swimming. While March was a bit of a bomb I still made my goal of 400 miles. I know now that biking will be a GIANT part of my summer. I could surpass my goals and even my year end goal by end of the summer.
Bring Your Biking A Game On Race Day
As coach puts it biking is a big part of the triathlon. Biking was my gateway sport into swimming and running. It was the first sport I fell in love with. I've never been big on hills. But I need to learn how to love them. I want that rush you get when you dominate a hill.
PAWS Chicago
I want to adopt them all. I am going to foster in June when the weather gets a bit warmer. I'd like to take my foster to the dog beach where I'm at. Here is a pic of a cutie. It's a few weeks old so I don't know if the doggie is still around. I hope not.
You know someone almost convinced me to like cats. I don't know if she reads my blog but you almost had me! On that note, I am almost at $1000 for my Team PAWS fundrasing goal. You know what that means. I will have to work 2 shifts in kitty city if I do. Now take into account that $500 is from me so you guys need to keep giving!
Final Note
All in all the pieces are falling into place. I'm going in for an swim evaluation next week.
Next time your coach says there will only be a few hills see this picture below.
As always thanks for reading.

Apologies
Sorry I haven't updated, I've been so busy with my move that i've had very little much time to do much more than come home and sleep. Much time has been spent volunteering at PAWS Chicago which is near and dear to me. I've survived not only a 5k but also an 8k with an injury that I had to nurse in between. However, I am back and I promise to update frequently. Especially since the race season has begun.
St. Paddy's Day 5K Benefiting PAWS Chicago
30:58!!!!!!
The race season has begun back in January for me. I did my first 5k in the Warm Your Heart 5k at McCormick Place. I did 35:32 during that race. It's only been 3 months since my last race and I improved my time by nearly 5 mins. Training helps immensely. All you need is a little belief in yourself and magic can happen.
Some post race thoughts. Running in below freezing weather can hamper your day if you don't wear gloves or cover your ears. However, a sweat band can make great ear muffs in that case. The St. Paddy's Day 5k was held on March 16th. It was pretty cold.
Start Corrals are important! It helps you gauge your time and your pace. I haven't found a full proof way to gauge my pace while I am actually in the race. My GPS threw all kinds of issues with distance and speed. Generally there are clocks though but its hard if you are not close to a mile marker.
Injury
Yes folks, shortly after my St. Paddy's Day 5K. My middle left toe was in pretty bad shape. I could barely bend it. It was very similar to the injury I sustained after switching to minimalist shoes. The middle toe where the toe meets the ball of my foot was in a bit of pain.
The injury was sustained because I treated the track like an obstacle course. I was dodging, and weaving, and jumping up over hills. All these turns and movements made it easy to slip, or hit the ground the wrong way. I do not suggest this in future races.
It took about 3 weeks to heal up but I kept aggravating the issue during my move into Chicago. I moved to Chicago! Sure its a 3rd floor apartment but its technically 3.5. So moving tons of bins/furniture up and down stairs didn't help my toe heal up much.
Volunteering & Team PAWS
I've been volunteering pretty regularly at PAWS Chicago. I work in dog town where I walk the dogs, clean their rooms, do laundry, as well as dishes. It's a labor of joy really. I love helping the dogs. They brighten my day and I stay to brighten theirs.
Shouts out to my PAWS crew. You guys are great! Looking forward to more social events. Thank you for volunteering as well.
Team PAWS Shepard
Team PAWS pairs up veterans with newbies like me. My mentor is pretty cool. He's already given me vital advice! Unfortunately I had to rush out of the apartment and get to the race but I lacked one very important tip. I didn't put lubricating jelly on certain body parts to prevent chaffing and I nearly screamed in the shower. I hope to be running with my mentor in a race this year.
Shamrock Shuffle 8K Running for Team PAWS
I jumped on the redline and sat with other Shamrockers. I took the subway somewhere! Brings me my memories of my hometown of NYC. It felt right. I had to courage to speak to a total stranger named Rich who was also on his way to the race. We were both worried if we were going to be late. We were surprisingly just a few mins late but the corrals did not start at the times they were suppose to, so I lucked out.
Rich I hope you had a great race and didn't further your current injuries. (he had a pulled muscle).
Nearly 45,000 people came in to run the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago's Grant Park. The course went through the city as well. Upon starting we were treated with a grand view of Chicago's skyline. It was a beautiful day one of our first 60s days officially kicking off spring.
As I ran the course getting into the rhythm of running it took a mile before I got the initial what i'd like to call stiffness out. Unfortunately, I hadn't been able to train very much since I was just coming off my injury. As I hit the pavement and put one foot in front of the other I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer mass of people in my wave. I was in wave H.

Powerups! At the first of two aid stations I picked up a cup of gatorade and quickly drank it and tossed the cup. I had this instant boost of energy and used that moment to propel my self forward dodging and weaving through the crowd of people getting drinks. My heart rate was pretty steady at 170 after my little boost for a block or two it was at 180. So I slowed it back down a bit.
I watch my heart rate like a hawk when I race. It helps me push my limits but keep myself at a good pace. During normal workouts my heart rate can be from 160-165. During races they can be between 170-190. Remember these numbers reflect me. Please consult your doctor if you are trying to gauge your heart rate zones.
4th mile turns and the signs. I nearly broke into tears just at the 4 mile mark. I was so euphoric from the endorphin passing through my body. I saw a number of signs that were just great. "You look incredible" "You are f**king awesome" It's amazing what a few simple words can do for you when you euphoric.
53:03 Finish. It's not the fastest, its not the best, its just mine and I don't mind. It's something I can shoot to break next time.

Team PAWS!
I joined Team PAWS! It's official i'm all signed up. I shall run with the team for the Shamrock Shuffle. That is coming up April 7th! My oh my how time flies.
Why join?
Running in itself is a good thing to do. Entering a race is awesome. I needed to go bigger. I needed stop thinking about myself and do something for others.
What is PAWS?
Team PAWS is an athletic team dedicated to raising funds for the PAWS organization. (Pets Are Worth Saving) Here is some info from PAWS website.
PAWS Chicago is the city's largest No Kill humane organization, focused on solutions to end the killing of homeless pets. Since our founding in 1997, homeless dogs and cats killed annually in the City of Chicago has dropped more than 50 percent. PAWS Chicago is working to build a No Kill Chicago -- a city where pets are no longer destroyed just because they are homeless

Real Training Has Begun
Month of February despite my downtime due to my feet and limping was a success. I ran biked and swam 130 miles. (25 mile improvement from January) However, with 5 months left till the triathlon I need to kick things into high gear with my training. I am happy to report I am back on the treadmill as of last week.
Swimming I've started doing only freestyle as most people do freestyle during the race. This is a specific challenge of mine. I really think I need a coach. (Position open) However, I also learned my pool is 25 yards long. So some of my distance calculations have been off. I did 10 laps doing freestyle and unfortunately my leg cramped up pretty bad but I was aiming for 10 regardless.
I've been doing breaststroke with hypoxic training. (Controlling breath and going longer without grabbing air) However, breaststroke is less intense compared to freestyle. This is going to be a fun challenge. My short term goal will be 10 laps by end of March without rest. (No hypoxic training yet)
Volunteering
My core has 3 aspects. Rest, Work, Exercise. However, surrounding the core is Play, Volunteer, and Learn. I will be fulfilling Volunteering aspects of my life plan. I have my first dog town shift tomorrow! Wish me luck.
\
I know you were expecting a funny picture. It's all about the pets this week, sorry!

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends (gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever friendship never ends,
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give,
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is.
What do you think about that now you know how I feel,
Say you can handle my love are you for real,
I won't be hasty, I'll give you a try
If you really bug me then I'll say goodbye.

Mid Week Update?
Still injured, it's pretty serious. Went to the doctor today. She doesn't think it's a stress fracture but she can't rule it out. I am off the treadmill for 2 weeks. However, I will continue with my swim and cycling as they aren't really load bearing exercises.
I was vitamin D deficient for a while. My vitamin D levels just normalized. Which is the reason why I am worried about a stress fracture. However, the doc say's she thinks its inflammation in my tendons. I will update next week. Until then cycling/swim only and taking it easy.
Team PAWS
I am thinking of joining Team PAWs for my races. If I were to race I would need to start raising some money. Right now with my injury I am weary about joining. I am volunteering though. If you think it'd be great for me to wear a Team PAWS jersey let me know.

(Inside joke)
Importance Of Sleep Cycles
In the overall scheme of being healthy. Something as simple as sleep is vital to keeping homeostasis. I didn't sleep right for two weeks and I've been victim to a variety of different issues. The junk food of course didn't help with this but in combination they are a horrible pair (sleep deprivation and junk food). I'm not going to say "never again" but at least I know the consequences of my actions. Being healthy means doing everything right, eating sleeping and exercise. (Tri-force of health)Someone once told me that they had a friend lose ton of weight eating junkfood but burning tons of calories on the treadmill. It is possible but it won't make you feel good.
Metabolism
I find that my metabolism is affected by my rest cycle as well. Too much rest my metabolism slows to a crawl, same with too little rest. Changing your eating habits also changes your metabolism. Realize that the changes are subtle and take time to develop I eat lots of small meals and snacks throughout the day to keep my metabolism functioning. It was only after a few months of this that my metabolism really changed.
Metabolism isn't how many calories you burn in a day. Your metabolism is what your body does to live. People often mistake metabolism for calorie burns. The bigger picture is different. How fast you heal, how fast you recover, your mood, your senses are all affected by your metabolism.
Running INJURY!!!!
Yes folks, I screwed up. I over did it on running in my five fingers. I understand what they mean by breaking them in. You aren't breaking them in so much as you are developing muscles for barefoot running. I believe I've exhausted my muscles that hold up my arches/toes. If I continue to run with these exhausted muscles it may lead to stress fractures which take months to heal. Sufficed to say I will be off the treadmill for at least another week.
Swimming
Swimming has also been affected by my injury. I kick off the side of the pool between laps so in order to do that I need to put load on my toes. However, I did swim my 35 laps on Wednesday evening. I also swam Monday and Tuesday. I love swimming.Notes
Not going to the gym for 2 days is killing me seriously. I want to go and I'm thinking about it today. I feel like someone with OCD when their OCD sense tingles. So for the lackluster update here. I gave you two funnies.

It was a rough week. Not only did I make it I beat my weekly quota!
Rest Is Important
If I've learned anything this week is that you can't over do it. I've been extraordinarily tired this week. Less sleep more junk in my system. I am not a happy boy. I had a Monster Energy drink once or twice a day everyday this week. Only 6 hours of sleep as well. My mental capacity was well suited but physically I was drained.
I was also eating more junk food. Superbowl Sunday had left me with a bit of leftovers. I had mac and cheese and pork roast. Recipe here Food Network. The pork roast, I threw some salt and pepper and garlic powder and roasted it for a bit.
Running
Five Fingers
I definitely feel a different spring to my step. Different muscles taking over getting stronger. It's certainly could have contributed to my overall physical drain. I think it is a good kind of tired though. It's certainly true that you need to start out slow in these things. You are building a different running stride. You can feel different muscles being used. I can feel my calves more than anything now.
Would I go back to my cross trainers? I'd go another week or two with these five fingers and switch between them and cross trainers. It would cause muscle confusion and help with my training in the long run I believe. Just like how swimming and cycling have different dynamics and use different muscle groups.
Yoga Update
Yoga, made me sleepy. I'm still not incredibly flexible like the instructor is but I am getting a bit better. The guy has no problem doing a full split. Wednesday as I said in my last post is stretch yoga or yin yoga. I need do this more often during the week but Wednesday is the only day that is offered up for this. There is a hot yoga on Monday's but I have prior engagements.
I am going to continue doing Yoga as I can definitely feel a benefit to this. Just like in swimming I feel calmer. I can think and be alone in my thoughts. It is genuinely rewarding.

The Funnies
Two things made me crack up this week. I mean, lots of things make me crack up but these two specifically.
The first, while on the treadmill my phone kept moving over to the right had to keep pushing it back like a typewriter. Ran .10 miles DING, slide phone back, continue running.
The second I met my collar bone for the first time. I mean I really noticed it. Then I started to notice my arms being toned from all the swimming I am doing.
I felt sexy.

2013 Bucket List
Week in Review
Five Finger Shoes & Running
My week has consisted of a few 5k runs and an 8k run. I also do one mile speed runs to gauge how far I am progressing. My fastest one mile run to date has been 8 minutes 43 seconds. I hope to beat this time in the middle of February. However we all know treadmill times do not mimic real world conditions so we need to take this into consideration when really understanding times/records.
Biking
Swimming
Swimming is doing wonders toning my upper body. A year of cycling has certainly toned my legs but made them disproportional to my top. Sometimes I think I am a muffin and I tip over easily. Swimming sculpting me very well. I look in the mirror sometimes and say "dat collarbone." New record in swiming 1650 meters in 53 minutes (1 mile). I wear my tri gear constantly so I can go swimming right after biking and running. At first it was a bit tight. I also get stares at the gym sometimes too because its like skin tight spandex but I look fabulous.
How I feel when people stare.
Other news
Yoga
I did some yoga this week with a friend of mine from work. It's thanks to her that I've gotten into running and actual races. Yoga was amazing. I've never been really flexible. I think with yoga I will gain some flexibility. It also helps after a long run. At first I was skeptical but after the pain in my calf's seemingly melted away I know yoga is worth some deeper investigation. I will start out once a week.
New workout partner
I picked up a new friend and a new workout partner. We're training each other in different things. Working out with someone is a great thing. It helps pass the time quicker and you get more enjoyment out of your workout. At least I do with my workout partner. It makes me push myself harder, better, faster, stronger. Padawan, you will get to where you want to be. Keep up the good work!
Also a shout out to http://runningforredvelvet.blogspot.com for inviting me out for some arcade fun at GameWorks.

My Swimming History
No lyrics just beat.
Position Music - The New York Nightfall
-----
Pardon the lack of lyrics. I don't listen to music when I swim (Although I want to, but have not gotten around to buying a waterproof shuffle). If I did have a song it'd something slow and strong like the above.
My zodiac sign is Pisces, a fish. When I grew up I loved the water. I didn't like to swim but I liked the water. I've never had issues with swimming. Due to my current body fat percentage I'm rather adept at floating. It could both be an advantage and disadvantage.
I haven't had much chance to swim in open water. I mostly hit the pool in my gym. I try to go at off peak hours because swimming in calm waters is much better. The pool is 25 meters long. I first started out by doing 10 laps in breaststroke form. Breaststroke to me is the easiest form. I'm not fast but I enjoy what I do so it doesn't matter.
Swimming allows me time to slow my thoughts and really find myself. Sometimes I pray to the beings in higher dimensions for guidance, support and strength. I don't want to sound all religious, it's not about that. It's a moment of reflection. In the water on a good day its nice and peaceful and quiet. I have less distractions and I can think. My breath is controlled like in meditation. Thoughts become fluid and more vivid.
Sometimes I close my eyes for brief periods of time and think about myself and where I've come. I imagine people pushing me along and I go a little bit further a little bit faster. It's really quite relaxing to swim. Now when I hit the big race i'm sure 10,000 people thrashing in the water won't be very calming. For now it's what it is.
Swimming can be scary for some of you who can't swim. Take it easy your first time out. Find a nice shallow pool and just try floating. You will get there I promise.
More stories to come....

My Cycling History
We rode on lightning we shone like the sun
In a thunderous symphony
We fought them hard we fought them so brave,
Sending them back to their grave
The Hammer has fallen
The fire still burns in our hearts
From the Lake of Fire they have come
Fierce almighty legions, one by one
When the Flames of Glory touch the sky
Trailblazers do or die
-------
Biking really set me on a course for some serious weight loss. I mean I had lost a significant amount of weight already in the small duration of time prior to it being warm enough to bike. However, biking made it so much more enjoyable. I knew that I would eventually tire of the gym. No pun intended there.
I knew that at my current pace if I didn't change things up my body would plateau and i'd stop losing weight. However, I asked my dad to send me my old Raleigh M50 that I bought second hand years ago while I was down in North Carolina. Fixing her up was a real challenge.
I called a few bike shops around where I worked. Performance Bike quoted me 150 to put her back together and 60 for a tune up. They also said it would take a month. Needless to say I hung up. I looked around and around but my co-worker told me to check this shop in Willow Springs called 2bici. (shameless plug)
No honestly, Joe, Ryan, Chase, Sweet Pea, if it wasn't for those guys I wouldn't have gotten so deep into cycling. Joe charged me just for a tuneup because part of a tune up is taking apart the bike. I didn't get any hassle from these guys and they were done in a day or two. I'll occasionally ride with these guys after they close shop for the day.
www.2bici.com
So my first time on my bike, I road like a mile or two. I was still hefty melon at this point. I got myself onto the Salt Creek Trail and let me just tell you. I fell in love immediately of how majestic and regal nature could be. It was nearly sundown and the kind of nature like creepy outdoor you are all alone feeling hit me. The way the sun hit the trees. It was still cold and chilly but I rode. After it got dark I peddled as fast as I could back home. I knew I had to explore the entire trail.
The bike's name is Thunder Horse by the way. She took me on many great rides. I gave her to my pops so he could enjoy the benefits of being healthy as well. In June of 2012 I bought my new CAAD 10 by Cannondale. A road race bike.
I put 100 miles on her before I named her. I rode my first half century ride on the 4th of July in 100+ degree weather. I named her Independence. Not because it was the 4th of July but because with her I had won my Independence back.
Here is the entry from my facebook page
"Today is July 4th 2012. On this day we celebrate each year the independence day of our country, the United States of America. What better way to celebrate than by claiming my independence from the old me. a fat whale of a person who sat in front of a computer all day watching tv and playing games. (no offense to my friends) but I mean ALL day.
Today I claim my independence from old self. Not only that but I have also found a name for my bike. My bike's name is Independence. Today I mark a turning stone in the war with obesity. I am no longer scared to push myself in the directions I need to go. I choose to do things not because they are easy but because they are hard.
Thank you to all who have given me encouragement these past few months. I couldn't have done it without you.
http://www.endomondo.com/workouts/kEW-2-EzYao"
Since my half century I've attempted a century ride 4 times and failed. However, this year I will do a century and more.....
Couldn't find a relatable picture so here you go.

Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter
------
How did I end up running? I ask myself this question at least once a week. Please understand that I don't ask myself in a negative light. It's more so why didn't I do this sooner. I'm in a much happier place now for having done this.
Sure i'm not fast. I can't run a marathon. Will I ever? I don't know. Right now its making the next step. Getting a tiny bit faster. Running a few more times a week. Getting my miles in per week. Did I run 8 and a half minute miles when I started? NO.
I attempted a few runs back in 2010. My fastest time back in those days were 22 minutes. A run in 22 minutes? No it was more of a walk. My shins killed me too. I did elliptical for quite a bit of time and only recently decided to try the treadmill out. Surprisingly I ran my first mile on the treadmill in just 14 minutes. 8 minute improvement! I kept on it, and sure I had to take a break or two here and there but as time progressed I got a little bit faster. I went from 14 to 12 to 11 to 10... I'm down to 8:43.
"I'm no Usain Bolt."~me in my last post.
Let's examine this quote. Who is Usain Bolt? "He is a Jamaican sprinter widely regarded as the fastest person ever. He is the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records since fully automatic time measurements became mandatory in 1977."~Wikipedia
Some questions come to mind when I say this. Why do I have to be the world's best runner? Why do I have to be the fastest? Am I the most powerful force in the universe? No, could I ever be? No. I don't admit gamma ray bursts. Why should I worry about being an Usain Bolt? Is he the fastest runner in the world? (in the animal kingdom hell no) It's feeble to think you shouldn't run because you aren't the fastest or the best. You run because it's fun, and you beat yourself.
Today I ran 5 miles in 56 minutes, on a treadmill with 0 incline. (not exactly real life conditions) However, it was an 8k run. I didn't stop or slow down I kept a constant 5.2mph on the treadmill. I am very proud of myself. I even ran the last 0.10 miles
I'll give regular updates as to my speed/incline/distance on Fridays.
Thanks For Reading

The Beginning
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns
......
I've started something that I couldn't have imagined i'd ever start before.
I'm running, biking, swimming. When you put those together you get
a triathlete. I'm just starting now and its becoming more than just
a hobby. It's almost a way of life for me now. Someone called me
an athlete once. I was a bit in shock to hear it. I was never
really fit before.
Athlete: a person who is trained or skilled in excerises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina ~ Merriam Webster Dictionary
At first I was scared of the new title. I felt I needed to achieve unrealistic goals to portray what I thought being an athlete meant. I'm no Usain Bolt, Lance Armstrong(even after the whole doping thing), or Michael Phelps. After running my first 5k I realized that is not what being an athlete is all about. It's about loving what you do and wanting to share your inspiration with others.
My first 5k, the Warm Your Heart 5k in Chicago IL. It was an amazing experience. I will always remember it. It was my first competitive race ever. I didn't go to compete with others I went to finish. I surpassed my goals and I earned it where it counts. Passing that finish line meant so much more to me than finishing. It meant I had started a new life. People who know me know that is true on many levels.

I really started this blog as a place to track my progress and give myself an incentive to keep going. I'm going to update at least once or twice a week and keep up with my training. After all I have the Shamrock Shuffle in little under 4 months.
